＜高校段階とカレッジ段階におけるcoreの相違＞

But schools have,after all,a huge task of plain exposition to perform if students are to have in their hands the main tools and elements of knowledge,and,instead of repeating this work,colleges should move on to new relationships and new stages of understanding.

→ここでのnew relationships and new stages of understandingは何を意味しているのか？高校との違いは具体的に何を指すのか？

(ⅰ)もしも単に学問的なものを指しているならば、これは果たして全ての人で共通としてのgeneral educationと言えるのか？

(ⅱ)もしもここでの段階(stage)は、citizenにおいて段階があり、カレッジでは更にcitizenとしての質を向上させることを意味しているならば、

→やはりカレッジにおいてエリート性が生まれてしまうのではないか。

→liberal educationのエリート性を無くそうとした結果、general educationを作り出したが、

カレッジにいけない人たちは、より発展的と思われるgeneral educationを受けられず、citizenとしての質が高められないことになる。

＜補足＞

もしも説(ⅱ)が成立するものであれば、このレポートが出された後のアメリカの社会背景を探ってみると、Chinese Exclusion Act（中国人排斥法） を1943年に廃止したことを始め、徐々に移民に対する制限をはずしていく動向が見られる。

→この移民の観点ももしかしたらこのレポートの中に内在しているかもしれない。

□”knowledge”とは何か？
・But information is inert knowledge. (p. 59)
→単なる「情報」よりも「活発な」もの
→”knowledge”が有する「活発さ」とは？

□”knowledge”と4つの”abilities”との関係は？
・Nevertheless, the real answer to the pessimist is that education is not merely the imparting of knowledge but the cultivation of certain aptitudes and attitudes in the mind of the young. (p. 64)
→”certain aptitudes and attitudes”= 4つのabilities?
→だとしたら，”knowledge”を取り入れることの意味は?

・It may be noted that the three phases of effective thinking, logical, relational, and imaginative, correspond roughly to the three divisions of learning, the natural sciences, the social studies, and the humanities, respectively.(p.67)
→例えばeffective thinkingとGEの関係を述べているこの部分では，3分野の学習との関係を”the imparting of knowledge”などといった表現ではなく”learning”という語を用いて，”correspond roughly”といった表現でその対応関係を示している
→”the imparting of knowledge”≠”learning”?
→ここで「学ぶ」対象は，”knowledge”? “methods of knowledge”? “information”? “certain aptitudes and attitudes”?

これを投稿している時点で未だ議論が続いていますが，ひとまず途中経過ということで掲載しておきます。

7月11日の論点（異文化班）

異文化班で出た論点です。

・human beingとcitizen の関係はどのようなものか。また、そこにhumanityはどのように関係するのか。

・社会科学（social studies）はfactとtruthのどちらと関係するのか。あるいは両方と関係するのか。

そのほかにも、ＧＥはformless（73－74）だとする本文中の記述に対する疑問や、ＧＥで習得するとされるabilityに対する疑問が出て、議論になりました。
